Tell it to a Tree and Break Something

Have you ever caught yourself trying to pick a fight? I was doing that yesterday. Reading too much into everything and "calling people out" on their shit. But it was only my shit that I wasn't properly dealing with. Then I saw this from Ian, and it reminded me to breathe.

I've known Ian since 2004 when we met at Peking University, and we've been friends ever since. And over that time, both of us have done our fair share of growing and breathing and laughing and being comfortable with one another to the point that we're perfect together and for each other - the consummate friends with history - like Latin. Ian is a blessing in disguise and also plays the ukulele... a man of many talents.

At one point, Ian was laid off from work here in Beijing, moved to Australia to be near his boyfriend and worked as a resident assistant in a dorm to bratty Brits living abroad. In the evenings, he was a telemarketer for wine sales and made a lot of money because of his American accent. On top of all that, he was studying for the US Foreign Service exam all the while remaining quite zen about the entire process and his lot in life.

Long story short, he's a certified Yoga instructor, diplomat to China working in the US consulate in Guangzhou and will be moving to South Africa next year. He's got a Bichon Frise which is a ridiculous dog for a grown man but perfect for him with a big heart.

And that's what it's boiled down to. I'm constantly surprised and inspired by Ian who nine years ago was impatient, stubborn, and defensive. But today he's giving, thoughtful and just can't stop giggling with the sharpest wit and sense of humor south of the Yangtze River. He even did a delightful video of him playing the ukulele to share with friends on Facebook. And just reading this postcard, you can feel the positive energy just screaming off the card in rainbow colors. Whatever happened at the Kripalu Center should happen everywhere and more often.

As for me, I took a nap, went to the gym and thought about what a jerk I was - thank goodness it's all temporary. So, whatever side of the yoga mat you're on, and however you feel about 28 days of tofu, breathing, acupuncture, hugs, kale, meditation and other hippie shit like talking to trees and breaking things... Ian's proof that with work and a little humility not to forget a fluffy Bichon Frise called Snowy, there is much to be appreciated. Thanks so much for your friendship over the years, Ian. I got your postcard!

Get there!
